Climate change is described as the greatest challenge of our times. Its impacts have had far reaching effects on people’s livelihood and threatened their very existence. Human activities are cited as the main cause of a changing environment, which has resulted in large scale impacts including changing precipitation patterns, increasing temperature rise, increasing floods in especially coastal areas, impacts on agriculture, health, economics, and all other aspects of life. To address this global challenge will require a network of professionals from different backgrounds who understand and use the science behind climate change including causes and effects, mitigation and adaptation, application of tools and technologies and effective communications. This module is therefore, designed to give insights into the introduction to climate change. Participants will explore how the climate is changing from the recent record. Specifically, participants will:

  • Understand the basic concepts and terms in climate change
  • Understand How and Why the Climate is Changing
  • Understand the fundamentals of the physical basis of climate change;
  • Describe and understand the major impacts of climate change;
  • Discuss individual and collective actions that are being and could be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Target Audience

Participants will come from a wide range of backgrounds including government officials, private sector official, civil society representatives, and project managers among others.
